There are a few things you need to know before outlining fonts in Illustrator. First, the font must be created as a vector file. Second, the outline must be set to a specific shape and size. Finally, the font’s color and style must be set. To create a basic outline for a font, select the Font tool on the toolbar and click on the first letter of your desired font. Then, drag and drop the cursor over the desired area of your document. The Font tool will automatically create an outline for you based on your selection. To change or add detail to your outline, use either of the following methods:
- Click on one of the points within your outline and drag it around until you’ve made it as tight or loose as you want it to be. You can also use this method to make small changes to your outline while keeping everything else constant.
- Click on one of the points within your outline and choose Edit > Stroke > Add New Point (or press F5). This will open up a new dialog box where you can enter values for both width and height (in pixels). Then, click OK to close out of this dialog box.
