If you’re like most people, you probably use Adobe Illustrator to create patterns. But if you’re like me, you’ve probably noticed that the patterns you create can sometimes look a little…off. Here’s how to fix them:

  1. Open your pattern in Illustrator and select all of the objects inside it.
  2. Click on the “Paths” tab in the “Illustrator” toolbar and click on the “Make Paths…” button.
  3. In the “Paths” dialog box that pops up, make sure that the “Type” drop-down menu is set to “Object.” Then, click on the “+” button next to the “Paths” list and select “Ellipse.”
  4. In the “Ellipse Options” dialog box that pops up, make sure that both of the following options are checked: The first option is called “Rounded Corners,” and it allows Illustrator to round off all of the corners of your ellipse; The second option is called “Bezier Curves,” and it allows Illustrator to create smooth curves along your ellipse’s edges (instead of sharp corners). Click on OK to close out of this dialog box.
  5. Select your ellipse object again and click on the Paths tab in the Illustrator toolbar again. This time, click on the Delete Path button (the one with a red X next to it) to delete your old path object from inside your pattern file.
  6. Now, drag a new path object into place by selecting it with your mouse cursor and clicking on either one of its corner points (or anywhere else inside your pattern file).
