If you’re like most people, you probably use Adobe Illustrator to create graphics for your website, print materials, or even just for fun. But if you’re like me, you also use Illustrator to edit PNG files—especially if they’re images that will be used on the web. There are a few things to keep in mind when editing PNG files in Illustrator:
- Keep the file size small. PNGs are limited to 8-bit color, so make sure your images are as small as possible without sacrificing quality.
- Use transparency sparingly. Transparency is great for adding subtle effects, but it can also add a lot of extra bytes to your file size. Try to use transparency only when it’s really necessary—for example, if you need to show the background of an image behind the text or elements in it.
- Use alpha channels sparingly. Alpha channels are great for adding transparency and other effects, but they can also add a lot of extra bytes to your file size if you use them too much. If an effect is important enough that you want to use an alpha channel, make sure you test the file size before saving it so you know how much space it will take up on your disk (and remember: always save as a PNG!). ..
